We see residual waste flows change in the future. Waste stripped of any and all raw materials while still generating maximum energy returns. We see opportunities to reuse or store the CO2 released by incineration. We convert the energy we generate into electricity and renewable heat.
AEB processes residual waste produced by municipalities and businesses, extracting as many valuable materials as possible. The remainder is efficiently incinerated, supplying heat and electricity to an increasing number of households and businesses. In doing so, AEB plays an important role in the sustainability ambitions of Amsterdam and the municipalities around us.
To work towards maximizing the value derived from waste, we have translated our mission into three pillars that together form our strategy through 2030:
We aim to recover much more – and preferably everything – from waste. We are investing in our sorting capacity and potentially in further processing and recycling. We do not want to do this alone. We are seeking strategic partnerships to shape this transition together.
We ensure that our operations are, and remain, in order. What cannot be used as a raw material is processed as efficiently and cleanly as possible (including through our plans for COâ‚‚ capture). We strive for calm and stability, minimize incidents and their impact, and create the (financial) room needed to invest in the transition we want to achieve.
We extract as much energy (value) as possible from the waste we inevitably incinerate and deploy it in the highest-value way at all times. This means a maximum and optimized mix of energy streams from our waste-to-energy plant, aligned with the energy demand at any given moment.
Two key conditions must be met to fully focus on these three pillars:
Safety is the fundamental prerequisite for fulfilling our societal role. This concerns the physical safety of our employees, as well as that of drivers, customers, and visitors. A multi-year Safety Plan has been developed to manage and monitor safety-related actions, with additional focus on a broad range of safety topics.
A stable organization is essential for any strategy, but a change in direction requires more. AEB aims to be a good employer and a professional organization. Key elements include offering employees perspective, retaining valuable talent, and continuously developing knowledge and expertise.
