AEB Public Annual Report 2024

AEB presents Public Annual Report 2024: “We have shown that we stay the course, even under pressure”

Waste-to-energy company AEB Amsterdam today presented its Public Annual Report 2024. With this publication, the organisation informs a broad public in an accessible way about the company, the processing of waste streams and the value it generates.

While 2024 was largely similar to 2023, two major themes continued to dominate: the challenges surrounding nitrous oxide cylinders and the company's sales process. The big difference with 2023: AEB gradually gained control, especially when it came to the nitrous oxide situation.

Nitrous oxide cylinders
The issues surrounding the nitrous oxide cylinders caused major outages and repair costs in 2023. Despite the absence of measures from the national government, AEB Amsterdam succeeded to gain control of the issue in 2024. Wim van Lieshout, CEO of AEB Amsterdam: “This is a great achievement by the organisation. But we are not satisfied yet. All the measures we have taken are expensive, and we had to pass these costs on to our customers. We continue to urge the national government to implement structural solutions.”

Municipality of Amsterdam to remain owner
In spring 2024, the AEB sales process was restarted, but in early 2025 the municipality of Amsterdam decided to definitively abandon the sale. This ended a period of prolonged uncertainty. The municipality will remain the owner for the coming 10 years.

Financial performance
2024 was a challenging year for AEB Amsterdam. While revenue increased, so did expenditure. This was mainly due to damage and extra maintenance due to nitrous oxide cylinders, increased depreciation and higher interest charges. In June 2025, the company was successfully refinanced. As a result, the financial basis has been greatly improved and is better suited to current and future tasks.

Staying the course
Challenges will remain for AEB Amsterdam. Waste-to-energy companies have to deal with changing laws and regulations, rising costs and necessary investments in sustainability. Van Lieshout: “We have shown that we are staying the course, even under pressure. This does not mean all challenges are behind us, but it does show that we are addressing them in a focused, systematic way and continuing to build a sustainable future”.
