About us

The Waste and Energy Company (AEB) is part of the City of Amsterdam. AEB is a world leader in the sustainable conversion of waste into energy and valuable, reusable raw materials. AEB’s mission: to extract the maximum possible benefit from waste.

Progressive and innovative

AEB uses innovative techniques to produce sustainable energy and reusable materials from waste. The generated electricity is fed to the grid and supplies households and industries all over the country. Nearly 99% of over 1.4 million tonnes of processed waste every year is recycled. This makes AEB the largest single-location waste processor in the world.

Environmental benefits on a global scale

The award of the R1 status means that AEB may now import waste for processing. Even taking into account the transport required, the resulting CO2 emissions are lower than if the foreign authorities were to dump the waste locally in landfill sites, since methane gas is released when waste is dumped, which makes a contribution to the greenhouse effect that is 20 times stronger than that of CO2. By sending their waste to be processed by AEB, local authorities abroad are contributing to a better environment for us all. Tram in Amsterdam

Committed employees

AEB has more than 300 employees working in four divisions:

  • Waste-to-Energy Plant
  • Hazardous Waste Depot
  • Regional Sorting Centre
  • Waste Collection Points

They are dedicated to handling Amsterdam’s waste and that of the surrounding municipalities. AEB’s employees benefit from a stimulating and secure work environment.

On the move, 24/7

Producing energy from waste is a non-stop business. Every day, 600 trucks and a number of freight trains deliver 4,400,000 kilos of waste to AEB’s waste-to-energy facilities. That equates to approximately 500,000 garbage bags per day! To reduce the need for road transport, AEB is also investigating the possibilities for a jetty for barges.

A sustainable future

Thanks to its knowledgeable and committed employees, AEB is helping to create a sustainable environment for current and future generations.
